GRE or GMAT ? What Exam to Take for MBA

Many Business Schools these days allow students to apply using the GRE instead of the GMAT. This means that many students have to choose between the GMAT and the GRE. But How do you decide which test to take?
These factors will help you determine what is best for you.

Difference between GRE and GMAT

The GRE costs $185 while the GMAT costs $250.  $65 is not a very big amount but it can add up if for any reason you need to retake the GMAT.

The GRE has an advantage of being highly spread throughout the world and so is also offered at more locations than the GMAT.

Verbal Content
The verbal section of the GRE is focused more on vocabulary. The GMAT verbal puts more emphasis on grammar, logic and reasoning skills. GRE favors those with a strong knowledge of English. That's why non-native English speakers may find the GMATs verbal section easier.

Math content
GRE math emphasizes quick number sense and number manipulation. GMAT math, however, requires you to create a systematic approach in order to answer word problems

GRE or GMAT – How to decide

  • Make a list of schools you want to apply to
  • Call the admission department of the schools and ask them if they accept GRE. Confirm if there is any advantage of taking one test over the other.
  • If all your targeted schools accept GRE, then GRE is your best move forward. If GMAT is compulsory for your targeted school, then go for GMAT
  •  If both tests work for your targeted schools and you are in a dilemma over which test to take, then the best way if to find out which test you’re better at. Both have free downloadable software that allows you to take an actual Computer Adapted Test (CAT). If you score significantly higher on one test, then you may want to seriously consider sitting for that exam.
